Hook Norton Brewery
A genuine Victorian tower brewery, still steam-powered, established 1849 in the village of Hook Norton near Banbury. Hooky and Old Hooky are the staples. Brewery tours run year-round and are excellent value.
From Victorian tower breweries still in family hands to garage-scale modern operations, the UK has more independent breweries today than at any point in living memory. Our directory covers the ones that matter.

Keighley-based, family-owned since 1858. Landlord Pale Ale is among the most-awarded cask ales in British history. Boltmaker is the lighter sibling. Both rely on Maris Otter malt and Styrian Goldings hops.
Chiswick-based since 1845, the brewery is now owned by Asahi but cask production continues at the original Griffin Brewery. London Pride is the flagship; ESB is the bigger, richer stablemate.
Tucked into a converted 13th-century water mill near Stow-on-the-Wold, Donnington has been brewing since 1827 in continuous family ownership. SBA and BB are the staples; the brewery is rarely open for tours but its beer is widely available across the Cotswolds.
Southwold-based, brewing since 1872, still independent. Adnams Bitter and Broadside are the cask staples; Ghost Ship is the flagship pale. The brewery uses environmental practices ahead of most peers.
Established in 1990 near Honiton, East Devon, Otter is one of the most distributed regional brewers in the South West. Otter Bitter is widely available; Otter Amber and Otter Bright are the variants worth seeking out.
Independent breweries founded in the last two decades that have shaped contemporary UK drinking.
Bermondsey-based since 2009, The Kernel reshaped London brewing with serious, deeply considered IPAs and Stouts. Production is small; bottles are hand-labelled. The taproom on a Saturday is a London institution.
Manchester-based, founded 2014. Cloudwater pioneered hazy IPA in Britain and operates at the modern-craft end of the spectrum: limited releases, taproom culture, can-focused. A fixture on UK beer-of-the-year lists.
Paignton-based, founded 2007. Bays Best is the flagship cask ale; the brewery has a strong reputation across the South West. Brewery tours are available and well-organised.
Founded 2002 in the Lake District. Hawkshead's Bitter and Lakeland Gold are widely available across Cumbria. The Beer Hall in Staveley is a destination in its own right for Lake District visitors.
Cromarty Firth-based, founded 2011. One of the more interesting Scottish craft brewers, with consistent quality across pales, IPAs, and stouts. Happy Chappy is the gateway pale.
Newport-based, founded 2012. One of Wales' most prominent modern breweries, with a strong identity (cute graffiti-style branding) and consistent beer. Cwtch is a former Champion Beer of Britain.
